close (World Premiere)

Celebrating their 15th year as a collaborative duo, casebolt and smith bring their trademark humor and accessibility to the Marsee Auditorium with the world premiere of close. A complex weaving of dance, story, video, and music, close untangles casebolt and smith’s pasts to get at a deeper understanding of their present - gesture by gesture, song by song.

close, weaves music, storytelling and gesture to reveal the ways music we love have the power to move, heal, and comfort us, and how our relationship to these beloved songs changes as we age. close tends more toward a space of healing and ritual - a slow dance that often finds us in embrace, tender partnering and dialogue with one another as we sift through messy, confusing feelings of isolation.

Using records as stage design, prop, and to play via a record player on stage, the overall work takes on a nostalgic tone, as the music charges up memories. Pulling from our personal record collections, we untangle parts of our past to get at a deeper understanding of the present: gesture by gesture, record by record. The music that helped us cope with teenage loneliness, now takes on a different use after 40 - when we are losing the people around us...
