A total of 120 fourth and fifth graders from the district’s 10 elementary schools spent the morning Saturday, Jan. 21 competing in the school district’s 32nd annual Elementary Math Field Day, a press release said.

Each school selected six students from each grade to compete as individuals in a competition consisting of one section based on the state standards of their grade level, and another section of harder problems called Brain Teasers.

Winners of a trophy or a medal represented each of the 10 schools, a tribute to the classroom instruction at all the schools, the release said.

Trophy winners will practice with retired math teachers Phyllis Thom and Beverly Mairs to train. A team of four students from each grade will be selected to represent the district at the Los Angeles County Math Field Day in April.

The winners include:

• Fifth grade trophy winners: Maori Nakamura, Anri Yamamoto, Hiyori Kubota, Hooman Zabihi, Harley Qiu, Calvin Wada, Matthew Nguyen, Paul Martin and Leia Spagnola.

• Fourth grade trophy winners: Ava Park, Navraj Singh, Cameron Liu, Annie So, Jacob Ma, Himari Oiwa, Aidan Murdock and Mason Shu.
