Point Vicente Elementary School was one of 29 public schools in California named as National Blue Ribbon Schools, according to a release from the state Department of Education.

A total of 279 public schools and 50 private schools were recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools nationwide, according to the release.

Schools are nominated by education officials and selected based on either their academic performance as measured by state standards, or their success in closing achievement gaps between student groups.

Elsewhere in the South Bay, the Hawthorne Math and Science Academy was also named a National Blue Ribbon School.
