PVIS Mathcounts team

The Santa Monica/South Bay chapter of Mathcounts is so large that in order to have room for their chapter competition, it was held at Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach over two days, a press release said.

The Ridgecrest Intermediate School team placed second to Manhattan Beach at the Feb. 24 event. The team of Taejun Lee, Kai Shimada, Aidan Pulmano and Jeremy Kim is coached by Eric Hendrickson.

On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Palos Verdes Intermediate School team placed second to Harvard-Westlake, losing by only one-fourth of a point. The team of Curtis Liu, Jinhee Won, Aaron Guo and Jack Yang is coached by Phyllis Thom and Beverly Mairs. Advancing to the March 12 state competition as individuals are PVIS students Collin Shiang and Matthias Yee. The state competition will be held at UC Irvine.

Also advancing to the state competition is the Miraleste Intermediate School team that includes Kiku Shirikata, Andrew Sinsioco, Caleb Stam and Jason Frankwick. Their team is coached by Ben Kroon, the release said.
