Helping Hands team with College Bound students to clean San Pedro

Dave Clements, left, and Elder Joshua Pollard, both of Palos Verdes Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Erick Hernandez of the Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro, work together to declutter the streets of San Pedro.

On an April morning, when the sun followed the rain, volunteers from Palos Verdes Stake, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined boys and girls from Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro’s College Bound program to clean the streets of San Pedro.

This was the first time the two groups teamed up to help Clean San Pedro, a beautification project now in its fourth year.

“It’s amazing what a few hours of this service can do to improve the cleanliness of our city,” said Steve Kleinjan, head of Clean San Pedro. He told the assembled workers that they would see less trash on the streets each year.

Among the workers were Joan Behrens, of Rolling Hills Estates, who was in charge of the event; Maurice Lam, of Rolling Hills, president of the Stake; and his wife, Liz. Others included family groups and those ranging in age from very young children to those beyond middle age.

“I could feel the enthusiasm there. It’s fun of working together,” said a young mother of two children.
