It seems most of the New Year’s Eve traditions enjoyed around the Palos Verdes Peninsula—such as kissing at midnight, popping open a bottle of bubbly, making improbable resolutions, shooting off fireworks or singing Auld Lang Syne—are steeped in ancient roots.
And though we may have modernized these ancient rituals, with beating on pots and pans to ward off spooky creatures lurking in the night, or like the Chinese who set off fireworks to chase away evil spirits, modern day revelers still like to don finery, eat sublime food and make a lot of noise to bring in the new year.
If you don't want to stay home with a cuppa cocoa and a cozy, illegal wood fire in the fireplace, here are a few hot spots on the hill that offer a dazzling way to ring in 2019.
Terranea Grand Ball Room
At the top of the list, Terranea is pulling out all stops from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. for its New Year’s Eve Extravaganza with a dinner fit for royalty, followed by the 2019 countdown in the Grand Ballroom. Popular radio Deejay Jay Tilles, KROQ’s “Lightening” will keep pace for the evening, plus The Dancing Fire Dance Company and Event Entertainment will provide the evening with a myriad of visually stunning shows.
Partygoers are in for an eye-popping evening of fire dancers and breathers, Belly, Hula, Tahitian, and Samba dancers and Cirque aerial acrobats. An open bar with VIP bottle service available rounds out the “night of well mannered frivolity,” as Professor McGonagal of Harry Potter fame would say. Cost is $175, $195 at the door adults (21) only. For reservations call 310-265-2836.
Trump National Golf Club
Trump National Golf Club will offer a sumptuous, five star New Year’s Eve Dinner experience from 5 p.m. to closing. The menu includes three full courses of marvelous gourmet creations by Chef Adam Crisafulli including Prime Beef Carpaccio, Veal Loin wrapped in Pancetta and laced with Ver Jus Sauce and a dish named John Dory featuring Poached Mediterranean White Fish.
To cap off the meal before midnight, Executive Pastry Chef Ron Stuart has put his heart and soul into his exquisite Poached Pear Almond Tart and his Chocolate Meringue Cake made of Valrhona Chocolate Macaroons, spun sugar and white chocolate peppermint stick. Cost is $115 per person. For reservations call 310-265-5000.
Peninsula Seniors New Year’s Eve
There’s still room on the bus for the Peninsula Seniors New Year’s Lunch and Matinee Show. The lively group is travelling to Alhambra for a luncheon among servers who are professional singers and dancers performing Colorful Songs of Broadway. A champagne toast of “cheers” will be served at 4p.m., which is midnight in London, to ring in an early New Year. The bus will depart from the Palos Verdes Performing Art Center. For details call 310-377-3003.
Think Prime will offer three dinner seatings on New Year’s Eve, 5:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 9:15 p.m. and will serve until midnight. Guests who reserved at the first two seatings may wish relocate to the lounge and patio areas for the rest of the evening to join in the merriment. The restaurant will be decorated balloons and streamers with live music and a deejay until about 1:30 a.m. Think Prime is located at 29601 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes.
