A Rancho Palos Verdes man who attempted to kidnap a 13-year-old girl at gunpoint pleaded no contest Thursday to one count of attempted kidnapping and faces 14 years in prison, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.
Garrett Evans Webber, 55, entered the plea in Torrance Superior Court and admitted he personally used a semi-automatic firearm, prosecutors said.
The incident occurred Oct. 30, 2017.
Prosecutors said Webber drove up to the 13-year-old victim as she walked toward Ridgecrest Intermediate School in the 28700 block of Highridge Road in Rancho Palos Verdes, bordering Rolling Hills Estates.
He exited his truck, pulled a handgun, grabbed the girl and tried to force her into a truck, but she screamed and escaped before nearby witnesses ran to her aid.
Webber drove away, but the witnesses gave police his license plate number. Deputies responding to the 911 call went to his apartment and arrested him. Ridgecrest Intermediate School was placed on temporary lockdown as deputies took Webber into custody.
Webber told investigators he confronted the girl because someone threw an object at his truck, but investigators said they found no evidence or witnesses to corroborate that claim.
Investigators found several guns and other undisclosed evidence at his apartment.
Webber is scheduled to be sentenced in Torrance Superior Court, Dec. 20.
