A loose tire slammed into the windshield of an SUV on the 405 Freeway in Long Beach, leaving the vehicle’s driver dead and its passenger hospitalized Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29.

The crash was reported at about 1:05 p.m., north of the Wardlow Road exit, according to a California Highway Patrol report. Motorists reported a loose tire on the southbound side of the Freeway that crossed over the center divider and collided with the woman’s vehicle in northbound lanes, Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jack Crabtree said.

The tire came from the rear left side of a Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by Neemia Curtean on the southbound 405 Freeway going about 50 mph.

Judith Yourman, a 61-year-old Rancho Palos Verdes resident, was behind the wheel of her BMW X3 on the northbound 405 Freeway, when the tire hit the driver-side compartment of her vehicle, according to CHP. The impact crushed the compartment where Yourman was positioned, causing her fatal injuries.

Yourman died before paramedics could arrive.

Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to free her passenger, 62-year-old Kevin Yourman of Rancho Palos Verdes, from the wrecked vehicle. He was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

An update on the severity of the man’s injuries was not immediately available.

Some lanes were blocked following the accident, but all lanes had reopened by 7 p.m., CHP said.
