Prying the Bay League football title away from the Palos Verdes will take a lot of work.
The Sea Kings began their quest for an eighth consecutive league title with a 42-18 win over Mira Costa.
The way to victory was paved by the offensive line and Ryan Wilson was one of the rushers following. He finished with four rushing touchdowns.
“We’re trying to mature as a team and come together,” PV coach Guy Gardner said following Friday’s win. “I think we’ve taken some steps. I still don’t think we’re there yet, but it was another nice step tonight.
“We still made some mistakes, but when you beat a quality program like Mira Costa, that’s an important step because those guys come out and play hard all the time.”
The Sea Kings have won three consecutive games to finally reach the .500 mark (3-3) on the season. In those three games, they’re averaging 40 points a game.
“It’s been a team effort,” Gardner said. “I think our defense is coming along, they had a shutout last week, offensively, we’ve taken some strides. We still need to probably be more balanced on offense.
“Our guys doing what we’ve been doing and just trying to do it better.
